Your Implementation Checklist for PROMs and PREMs

In our previous article, we discussed the critical role that patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and patient-reported experience measures (PREMs) play in driving safe, high-quality, value-based healthcare.

However, despite their importance, collection and analysis of PROMs & PREMs within health systems globally remains fragmented and inconsistent.

To break down key barriers and help you understand what’s needed along the implementation journey, we have adapted the checklist below from a widely cited systematic review ¹.

Before Data Collection

  1. Secure financial resources for software & staffing, and engage stakeholders early.

  2. Choose user-friendly software that can present real-time data back to clinicians.

  3. Offer validated PROMs and PREMs to patients in multiple languages, which measure the domains that matter most to them.

  4. Define PROMs and PREMs triggers, with clear score thresholds.

  5. Support patients with impairments, low literacy, or no internet access.

  6. Integrate PROMs into existing workflows, providing training and materials.

During Data Collection

  1. Ensure timely PROM and PREM completion and seamless EHR integration.

  2. Provide patients with real-time feedback on their PROM and PREM results.

  3. Remind clinicians to review results and use data for performance tracking.

  4. Offer technical support and rapidly refine the process based on user feedback.

After Data Collection

  1. Provide clear, easy-to-read summaries of patient data.

  2. Align implementation goals with organisational priorities and funding strategies.

  3. Assign clear responsibilities for data review and support change management.

  4. Encourage staff buy-in with training, incentives, and peer learning.

  5. Standardise processes across sites and conduct regular audits for improvement.
